Descriptions of the advanced program majoring in Water Resources Engineering

[SIE] Thuyloi University (TLU) was selected and funded to run the advanced program majoring Water Resources Engineering according the Decision no. 8652/QĐ-BGDĐT, dated 24th December, 2008. It is taught in English following the curriculum of Colorado State University and has been run since 2008. The basic information of the program includes:

Title: The advanced program in water resources engineering

Degree provider: TLU. However, since 2015, if students attend the program named “Engineer 2+2”, after 3 years at TLU, students may spend their next two years (4 semesters) or 5 or even 6 semesters at the partnership university which would provide them with the degree.

The objectives: After the graduation, students are expected to be able to:

  • - Clearly understand the basic knowledge of politics and laws;
  • - Know, build and solve the technical problems in water resources; independent working environment and work in groups;
  • - Analyze the technical problems, laws, regulations, social and economic issues in managing the multi-field projects;
  • - Study and develop professional knowledge and skills and leadership, attend the training courses, conferences and/or pursue postgraduate studies
  • - Use English well in communication, work and research.

The program outcomes:

Graduates from the advanced program will be able to:

  • - Apply mathematical, scientific, informatics and basic engineering knowledge into water resources;
  • - Conduct experiments, deal with data and use the standards of water resources engineering and other related civil specializations;
  • - Design a system or a project to satisfy the realistic requirements with full understanding of the economic, environment and social impacts, feasibility and sustainable development;
  • - Work in the multiple fields;
  • - Solve the technical problems (design, planning, management and operation of structures) in the water resources engineering and the other related civil engineering fields;
  • - Understand the common issues in water resources engineering and responsibility and professional morality principles;
  • - Communicate, study and work well in English;
  • - Have knowledge to understand the impacts of the technical solutions in water resources in each economic, environmental and social context;
  • - Understand the vitality of lifelong learning;
  • - Have basic knowledge of political theories, contemporary issues, policies, strategies and laws ;
  • - Apply the methods, skills and modern technical tools in engineering.

Students may get the direct admissions without examinations if they are awarded with the prizes in the international competitions according to the MOET’s regulation or graduated from the gifted high schools or have 3 years of excellent academic results at high schools.  

The eligible candidates with IELTS at least 5.5 or equivalent may skip the first year and be considered to be the second –year student.

Teaching staff:

The lecturers or teachers at TLU are experienced, highly qualified and good at English. The visiting professors are from Colorado State University and many other international universities.

Training and graduating procedure:

The course follows the system of credits. The eligibility to graduate follows the training regulations of credit system at TLU. Students must complete all the compulsory course as well as the optional ones required by the program. The minimum number of credits is 151 (applicate to Cohort 56 onwards) with GPA >= 2.0 out of 4.0.
